hen it comes to training there is nothing easier than making excuses for ourselves. We all do it. I’ve been doing it of late too. For me it was being run down before Christmas, dealing with a hamstring tear over that holiday period, and now “have no time” because of work and physiotherapy taking up all my time. Some excuses have a base in validity (which can make them even more dangerous) Other times it’s because I’ve been afraid of how far I’ve fallen from when I was training hard.

If you’ll excuse the rather specific pronouns, this applies to us all. 0430 is very early to get up and go to the gym, for a run, swim or bike. I know it, I feel it and yeah, I’d absolutely rather not do it, but I have to right now. It’s an essential part of my physiotherapy and if I want to heal properly and be able to perform and train hard again in the future without reinjury, I have to just get up and get out there. Now, you might say, “but now you have a reason to get up at 0430”. You’re right, but it’s still a choice, and beyond that it’s my choice to try to beat my top speed every Monday morning too. My other option is to coast through it. 0430 AM sucks, right up until you’re getting going, then the fun can start. Mental fortitude, inner strength….these things are not easy, but they are accessible for us all regardless of our level of experience in all things physical. You don’t have to be a pro athlete to get up in the morning and get going. Not only that, but I promise you, you will feel better afterwards. Add to that some diet discipline and sprinkle of excitement when you start to see the shift in not only your body, but your outlook as well, then you start to really feel that sense of self, that sense of personal pleasure through hard work and the magnificent rewards that it reaps. You don’t have to do the workout that will cause the gods to quail in fear. You just need to get up and move. You’ll find that you’ll actually want to push harder the more you do it. Inner strength is available, you just have to reach out for it. I reached for it myself this past weekend, I got into my gym and finally did an upper body workout. I organised myself, planned, and made sure I got in there. No excuses. You have to conquer yourself, even if it means on a daily basis. Then, then you can mould yourself into the physical specimen that you want to be.  So get in there, out there, get up or get to bed early. It’s yours for the taking. Let’s do this, you and I. Let’s redefine strength together.
